2004 World Conference Legislation
G-11 Request for New Statement on Homosexuality
From Sierra Pacific USA Mission Center:
Whereas, The World Church Leadership Council has called for a discussion on
the formal recognition and ministerial inclusion of members of the Lesbian and
Gay communities; and
Whereas, This discussion is difficult to structure due to the complexity of
institutional, cultural and emotional factors; and
Whereas, A question with such far reaching theological, social and
institutional implications cannot be successfully resolved within the parameters
required by this conference; and
Whereas, The World Church's position needs to be explored with a
sensitivity to the competing and conflicting perspectives brought by members of
our community; and
Whereas, Any decision made in response to this dialogue will have legal,
theological and cultural repercussions; therefore be it
Resolved, That the World Church Leadership Council craft a position to
replace the statement on homosexuality made by the Standing High council in
1982; and be it further
Resolved, That this position statement address foundational questions
including but not be limited to jurisdictional independence, legal and practical
implications within the context of our national and international communities,
the real and potential implications upon world church theology, sacraments and
ordinances, and scriptural canon; and be it further
Resolved, That the World Church Leadership Council provide an annual
update on the development of this position statement within the Herald and other
appropriate world church communications allowing for response to and
consideration of the factors involved in the discussion and creation of this
statement; and be it further
Resolved, That a draft of this position statement be brought to the World
Conference of 2006 for discussion and action; and be it further
Resolved, That the church uphold one another in prayerful support as
these foundational questions are explored and resolved.
